The Incredible Streetart of Lisbon

The Incredible Street Art of Lisbon - Jeppe 2.b

My class and I recently visited the beautiful country of Portugal, containing the wonderful city of Lisbon. Lisbon is a city with many qualities ranging from incredible monuments, to a wild nightlife. One of the most exciting things by staying in Lisbon, is all the amazing street art that you can take on a tour around town and see new, old, political and non political pieces. We went on the tour, joined by a guide and her friend, and it was an incredible experience seeing the different pieces that different artists have created in the urban community of the city. All around Lisbon you can find a lot of street art, and you can clearly feel that the population is split on whether the street art can be classified as art, or as mere vandalism of their beloved city. Very soon into our tour it was very easy to tell which part of the population our tour guide was, showing her passion for the art right from the start. Decking the streets in spray paint is illegal in Lisbon and Portugal, but their government has made initiatives to have space in the city where the government has set up canvas for the artists to use fully legally, where artists can spray the art that they create. This is also where the absolute highlight of the tour took place.
Our tour guide had brought spray paint with her, and she divided us into two teams where we had a competition in who could spray the prettiest piece of art, judged by the teachers. Also we held a quick acapella rap concert with Mads from our class who rapped his song “Skruetrækker” that we were making a music video for at the time. After this our teachers judged our sprays and unfortunately our spray lost, but it was still fun and really inspiring to see.

After that we went to see some of the bigger pieces to be found in Lisbon, including the painting of the Circle of Life portrayed by the life cycle of a horse. Our guide also took us to the theater part of time, where according to her, lot’s of big plays have been performed. She took us to a parking lot where there had been a jam session, a session where artists go together and build upon each others art. The parking lot was filled with incredible street art, ranging from a hyper realistic painting of a woman, to more traditional tagging and text. The whole tour was quite amazing and inspiring, and it was really hard not to think, and look for street art the rest of the day.
